Renovation Progresses

Posted February 4, 2012:

We are now closer than ever to the opening of the new section of our office. In addition to the creation of additional treatment rooms, we have also updated the decor. On Monday 2/6 the reception area and main hallway will also have a new look.

All of us here at Hilltop continue to be extremely appreciative of your patience during this time.

Pardon our Dust Update!

Posted January 11, 2012:

Construction is underway and progress is visible. Soon we will have one less chair than normal as the renovation progresses. Additionally, we won't have scheduled appointments from 1/23 to 2/5 to facilitate the joining of the old and the new.

What this means to you is that there may be some limitations to available appointments for a short time, but once the renovation is complete, there will be plenty of room.

Rest assured that we will be here during the shutdown period and will be happy to assist you with any emergencies. Also know that we are working very hard to make sure this trying time is of minimal inconvenience to you, our wonderful patients. We appreciate your patience and look forward to our new office.

Pardon our Dust!

Posted December 9, 2011:

We are extremely excited to announce that we are beginning a renovation project. In order to serve you better and improve the care we provide we will be updating equipment and creating new treatment rooms.

The renovation will encompass opening up new space in the existing suite next door. The additional treatment rooms will ultimately improve the number of appointments that are available. Additionally we will be updating décor and equipment. The project will be done in phases beginning now and finishing summer of 2012. During that time you can expect little if any interruptions in office hours. However you can expect the typical noise and dust as with any construction project.

Though we appreciate that there may be some slight inconveniences, we are convinced that once all is finished you will love the new and improved office.

We thank you for your understanding.

Dentist Should Advise Vegetarians on Good Oral Health

Posted September 3, 2011:

The following is reprinted from the web site of the Academy of General Dentistry:

Health concerns about fat and cholesterol have prompted many people to become vegetarians, and the nutritional deficiencies that can sometimes result may reveal themselves during dental exams.

Academy of General Dentistry spokesperson Ludwig Leibsohn, DDS says he usually asks patients if they adhere to vegetarian or other special diets.

"Most adult vegetarians are very knowledgeable about nutrition," says Dr. Leibsohn. "They maintain their diets in a proper fashion."

Children, however, need a well-balanced and nutritionally complete diet for proper growth, and the potential for deficiencies is greatest among children and teenagers who put themselves on vegetarian diets without knowing enough about their nutritional needs.

Although vegetarian diets vary, some vegetarians, particularly those who do not consume any food of animal origin, can experience deficiencies in calcium, vitamin D, riboflavin, vitamin B12 or complete proteins. Studies show that by eating the right amount of fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes, they can get the nutrients they need.

"An adult on a vegetarian diet for a prolonged period can be at increased risk for periodontal (gum) disease from a lack of vitamin D and calcium," says Dr. Leibsohn.

Dr. Leibsohn recommends that anyone considering adopting a vegetarian diet seek counseling from their dentist or a nutritionist to learn about substituting foods to get all the necessary nutrients. He also suggests taking a multiple vitamin daily.

Teeth may soften when there is a shortage of vitamin D, becoming more susceptible to decay and periodontal disease. Vitamin D is produced in the body with sun exposure, so deficiencies are rare, but it can develop in those who do not consume milk or fish. Adding vegetable margarines or soy milk to the diet may solve the problem.

Diet is an important part of an individual's medical history, and patients should always inform their dentist if they adhere to vegetarian or other special diets, says Dr. Leibsohn.

Community Support

Posted April 7, 2011:

We have a strong belief in giving back to our community. Dr. Day and staff members regularly staff the Moss Free Clinic in Fredericksburg and have been doing so for the past 12 years. The Moss Free Clinic is open to patients from the surrounding area for dental care. The clinic targets folks in a specific income group that are uninsured. Dr. Day also participates in Virginia's Donated Dental Service program. This program provides dental treatment to disabled residents in the state of the Virginia.

Dr. Scelfo has a long history of communities support as well. Dr. Scelfo is the past chairman of our local "Make A Wish" foundation.

Introducing Digital Radiography

Posted February 13, 2011:

Radiographs are essential to the practice of dentistry. They are used to look into areas that are not available to the naked eye during an examination. By using radiographs we are able to diagnose cavities when they are small. Treating smaller cavities makes the tooth stronger and keeps the cost of dental treatment down. Radiographs are also use to find cysts or other lesions that can develop in the jaw.

The use of x-rays in the dental office have a long history of safety. For the past 20 years, the radiation exposure from 4 dental films is 75% less that the radiation exposure if one were to fly from New York to California.

That being said, we are proud to announce we are now using digital radiography in our office. Digital radiography offers higher quality, instant viewing, but most importantly lower radiation. Though the old version of traditional dental x-rays are safe, our new digital system reduces exposure 50% to 75%.

We are greatful for the kind words....

We recently received this email:

Dr. Day,

My name is ********** my family and I were former patients of yours. We left the practice when my family relocated to NM. You may recall that I am a dental hygienist. While in NM I have returned to school to obtain my Masters Degree in Dental Hygiene. I am currently working on my thesis entitled Dental Considerations in Patients with ALS. One of the components is an online survey which has been distributed through ALS Association Executive Directors throughout the country. SO... I wanted to let you know that while reviewing responses you can imagine my surprise when one (anonymous) subject wrote something along the following "Dr. Jeffrey Day of Fredericksburg, Va. has been very accepting and mindful of my disease". I thought you would enjoy the compliment and the irony that the only dentist we knew in the State of VA ends up having a patient that contributes to my research. ALS is a horrific disease. What a compliment to know that you are making a difference in that person's life.

Sincerely, ************

Our thanks goes out to the author for the kind words.

Sealants reduce tooth decay

Posted April 13, 2010:

Did you know that the combination of fluoridated water supplies and sealants have reduced tooth decay by 70%!

Sealants are a resin that is bonded to the chewing surface of permanent molars. They are placed painlessly and without the need for numbing.

They are bonded to the chewing surface effectively sealing the grooves and preventing the germs that cause tooth decay from getting into the teeth.

To learn more about sealants, go to the "Dental Information" tab on our home page, then click on "cleanings and prevention" then "sealants".
